Is Quiet Quitting the New Revolution? How to Find Balance in a World Gone Mad

The teambuilding, the lies, the worthless corporate trainings, the turf guarding, the cliques, the come back to the office orders,  and the redundancy. Employees have had enough. While the overall mission may be positive, many employees feel their work is repetitive, unfulfilling, and that middle management don’t have their best interest in mind. Many of these employees find out the truth when sudden and drastic layoff come their way. Companies are continually demonstrating a lack of commitment and reliability with their employees, and the employees are returning this lack of respect.

There’s currently a rise in something called “quiet quitting” – where employees, instead of leaving their jobs, simply do the bare minimum. Sound familiar? It’s funny to me that the term “quiet quitting” has just joined the lexicon as I can assure the reader, as a former federal employee, this concept has existed for a very long time. Smart employees know that hard work does not simply equal more money and status. Hard work often leads to expanded workloads and responsibilities without the guarantee of greater financial benefit. Quiet quitting, while a stop gap method for open rebellion, isn’t a long term solution to the foundational problem. This foundational problem goes much deeper.

The employee is quite invariably feeling a number of different things. Burnout, overwhelm, undervalue, imprisoned, disillusioned, and exhausted by the drudgery of constant output without belonging, importance, or real connection to the overall mission or product. Add to that the constant pressure to be “on” – thanks to technology blurring the lines between work and personal life – and it’s no wonder so many are struggling. We’re facing a collective crisis of fulfillment.

So, what are companies doing to fuel this fire?

  • Micromanagement: Instead of empowering employees, some companies are suffocating them with excessive control and scrutiny.
  • Lack of Flexibility: Rigid work structures and a resistance to remote work options leave many feeling trapped.
  • Poor Communication: A lack of transparency and open communication breeds distrust and resentment.
  • Ignoring Mental Health: Many workplaces still fail to acknowledge the importance of mental health and well-being, leaving employees feeling unsupported and alone.

Employees know something is wrong, but there doesn’t seem to be a realistic sense of exactly what to do about it. The problem stems from the western system that has placed diligence, finance, and personal sacrifice over personal enrichment, freedom, meaningful relationships, and the importance of the spirit.

American children are educated to be diligent factory workers who can retain enough information to perform jobs. More recently, education has become a mechanism to install concrete social beliefs instead of creating lifelong curiosity, wonder, standards, and a deeper sense of the value of a life.

The current education system and corporate America don’t promote the values that we have the inherent ability to transcend limitations and create the reality we desire. We have the complete ability to tap into our inner resources by recognizing that we are not defined by our circumstances. We have the power to shift our mindset, reprogram our beliefs, and assume control of our lives.

Find Fulfillment by focusing on the fundamentals:

  • Self-Awareness: Start by honestly assessing your current situation. What’s causing you stress? What are your needs and priorities?
  • Boundary Setting: Learn to say “no” and establish clear boundaries between work and personal life.
  • Mindful Practices: Incorporate mindfulness techniques like meditation and deep breathing to reduce stress and improve focus.
  • Focus on Your Quadrants: Strive for balance across the four key areas of your life: personal, professional, wellness, and spiritual.
